Venice Compass Money

Tourist tax calculator

Compute the Venice imposta di soggiorno (tourist tax) for your stay. Caps, age brackets, and seasonal bands are all handled.

What this solves

Venice charges a tourist tax (imposta di soggiorno) per person per night, set by the Comune. The bands depend on hotel category and, for some brackets, season. The tax is capped at 5 nights per stay for hotels but applies for up to 10 nights for apartments in some municipalities. Most travelers are confused about how much to budget. This tool computes the total.

How to read the result

"Per adult per night" is the Comune-published band for your hotel category. Children under 10 are exempt. Children 10-15 pay 50% of the adult band (some categories). The cap is the maximum number of nights the tax is charged per guest per stay; this is usually 5 in Venice proper.

The tax is collected by the hotel at check-out (rarely at check-in). It is a per-person tax, not a per-room tax. A 2-adult stay in a 4-star hotel for 5 nights = 2 × €4 × 5 = €40.

Limitations

FAQ

Is it included in the room rate?

No — it is added at check-out in cash or card. The hotel collects it on behalf of the Comune.

Do day-trippers pay?

No. The tax applies only to overnight guests at paid accommodations.

What if I refuse to pay?

The hotel cannot refuse to host you, but the tax is legally owed. Refusal to pay at check-out may result in a follow-up invoice from the Comune.
