Dress code decoder
Pick the venue. The tool returns the actual dress code rules — basilicas enforce strict rules, Biennale is smart casual, Redentore patron is gala tier.
What this solves
Venice enforces dress codes that tourists routinely miss. Basilica San Marco turns people away at the door for shorts above the knee or halter tops. La Fenice opera house has tiered rules (gala tier for opening night). The Biennale is smart casual. A wrong outfit means you don't get in. This tool returns the actual rule per venue.
How to read the result
"Rule" is the strict requirement. "What gets you turned away" is the practical list of items that have caused entry refusal. "Tip" is the workaround — usually a scarf or light layer to borrow at the entrance.
Some basilicas lend scarves at the entrance for a deposit (returnable). It's a quick fix when you forgot.
Limitations
FAQ
Are jeans OK in basilicas?
Yes, as long as the shirt covers shoulders. The rule is "covered shoulders + covered knees." Jeans are fine.
What about sleeveless tops?
Sleeveless is borderline. A scarf over the shoulder is a safer choice. Halter tops and tank tops are usually refused.
Can I wear a hat inside?
Take it off at the door. Religious sites require heads uncovered for men. Women may keep head coverings in some basilicas.
